Hobson Education
Small-group learning for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2
Introducing Ourselves
A new curriculum-based small-group learning centre for home educating and flexi-schooling families
Hobson Education is opening its doors for the first time. We are an independent learning centre built for home educating and flexi-schooling families: structured academic tuition in small groups, alongside the freedom and flexibility that brought you to home education in the first place.
Acorn
Our Mission
“We believe every child deserves to be truly known by their teacher, and not simply taught. Through small-group tuition for ages five to seven, Hobson Education brings real individual attention, academic rigour and creative spirit to our classes, nurturing confident, curious learners ready to thrive, in the classroom and beyond.”
A child's education is more than a record of marks. Our aim, always, is the whole child: academic, social and emotional, encouraged to the full extent of their ability, and helped to see that they have something worth contributing to the group.
OUR APPROACH
Two programmes, one hub
Mornings are given to the core academic subjects. Afternoons are dedicated to creative enrichment workshops, building the practical skills and confidence to succeed beyond the classroom. Come for the full day, or choose the programme that suits your week.
Wellbeing every day: time to pause, notice, and name how we're feeling is built into each day, quietly growing focus, resilience, and self-knowledge.
With so few children in a room, every one of them is properly known, their strengths, their interests, the things they find challenging. Friendships form easily here too, between curious children who are glad to have found each other.

Why Small Groups
Not a classroom. Not a lonely desk.
Somewhere between the crowd of a classroom and the isolation of a solitary desk sits the small group, and it's where children learn best.
I.
Real individual attention
In small groups, not classes of thirty, every child is noticed, corrected and encouraged, every single session.
II.
Confidence in company
Children find their voice alongside peers who are learning too. The collaborative spark of a classroom, without getting lost in the crowd.
III.
A pace that fits the child
Our tutors stretch a child who's ready to move on, and give one more explanation to a child who needs it, in real time, within the same class.
IV.
Private attention, fair price
The personal attention families want from private tutoring, shared across a small group, at a fraction of the price.
First, the hands
Letters are traced and felt before they are written; quantities are built and exchanged before they are calculated; words are assembled from moveable pieces before they are spelled unaided. We find that ideas take root most securely when a child can first touch and move them, a particular help to those whose early schooling was disrupted.
Then, the practice
The emphasis shifts toward calm, structured practice: a new idea is explained plainly, tried together, and only then attempted alone. A mistake, in our lessons, is simply part of the working, never a judgement. Work set between sessions reinforces what has been learned and reveals, gently, where more attention is needed.

Our Curriculum
Home educating families are not obliged to follow the National Curriculum. We choose to follow its framework as it offers a reliable guide that ensures nothing important is overlooked, and that your child is keeping pace with children of the same age in mainstream school.
Key Stage 1 Programme
Whatever a child's starting point, our Maths, English, Science and Humanities course is built to grow both ability and appetite for learning, through a structured, step-by-step method.
Maths
Foundation Topic
Consolidating core number sense: mental arithmetic, fractions, telling the time, 2D and 3D shape, and the other building blocks of primary maths.
Challenge Set
Strategies for multi-step questions, laying the groundwork for independent problem-solving.
English
First Steps
Phonics and handwriting come first, giving children the tools to decode words and form letters with confidence.
Building On
From there we build spelling, punctuation and grammar, teach children to read closely and comprehend what is in front of them, and introduce creative writing so they enjoy putting ideas of their own on the page.
Science
Living Things and Materials
Plants and animals, the parts of a plant and the human body, how living things grow, everyday materials and the changing seasons.
Working Scientifically
Observing closely, asking questions, carrying out simple tests and recording what they find in drawings, tables and words.
Humanities
History and Geography
Children meet significant people and events from the past, and learn to read maps, name the continents and oceans, and describe the world around them.
Thinking and Enquiry
Asking questions, weighing evidence and explaining what they have found, so children begin to think like historians and geographers rather than simply recall facts.

Key Stage 2 Programme
Building on Key Stage 1, children develop independence, deeper reasoning and the confidence to express ideas of their own.
Maths
Number and Calculation
Place value into the millions, long multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages, and times tables to fluency.
Reasoning
Ratio, early algebra, measurement, geometry and statistics, applied to multi-step problems where children explain their thinking.
English
Creative Writing
Planning, drafting and editing stories, poetry and persuasive writing, with care for structure, vocabulary and a voice of their own.
Reading and Grammar
Reading longer texts closely, inferring meaning and discussing an author’s choices, alongside spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Science
Life, Materials and Forces
Living things and their habitats, the human body, states of matter, light, sound, electricity, forces, and Earth and space.
Working Scientifically
Planning fair tests, measuring accurately, recording results in tables and graphs, and drawing conclusions from evidence.
Humanities
History
From the Stone Age to the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, Ancient Greece and an early civilisation, building a clear sense of chronology.
Geography
The UK, Europe and the Americas, rivers, mountains and climate, with map, compass and fieldwork skills.
Homework
Set each week to reinforce what's covered in session, and reviewed together at the start of the next class to check understanding and keep progress moving.
Small Groups
Classes are kept small enough to foster a warm, cooperative spirit.
Feedback
Progress is tracked continuously across all subjects, with regular reports to parents.
A Morning With Us
What a morning looks like
Literacy might be a book discussion, reading aloud for confidence, handwriting practice or a piece of creative writing. Numeracy builds mental arithmetic and problem solving, introduced at the pace each child is ready for. Science and the humanities open the week out beyond the basics.
Our tutors are chosen as much for their manner with children as for their command of a subject, the two, we find, are rarely separable. Each begins by understanding precisely what a child needs, then shapes their teaching to match that pace.

Trust & Safeguarding
What we ask of ourselves, before we ask anything of you
Every family may see, before a single lesson begins, evidence of our DBS checks, our public liability insurance, and our safeguarding policy. A short information form allows us to understand a child before they arrive, and a plain parent agreement sets out our terms without small print. Our privacy notice explains, simply, how family information is kept and used.
